Take Ten - Violence Prevention & Conflict Resolution

Take Ten Program at Robinson Community Learning Center
By Lauren Kross

In 2011, Robinson Community Learning Center received an AmeriCorps grant. All programs housed at the Robinson Center received at least one full time member as well as part time members in addition to the volunteers they already have. Ellen Kyes, Director of Take Ten, said:  “AmeriCorps has allowed the Take Ten program to experience tremendous growth and bring projects to fruition."

Take Ten AmeriCorps members serve in various areas of the program. All members teach the program in at least one classroom of students and assist with one major project. These projects include curriculum update, volunteer evaluation, social media, training videos, and the production of the Take Ten comic book.

Take Ten is a violence prevention and conflict resolution program.  Anne Perry launched “Take Ten: Talk it out, Walk it out, Wait it out” as a slogan campaign to end violence in urban Chicago schools in 1995.

Today, over 125 volunteers and AmeriCorps members from Notre Dame, Holy Cross College, Saint Mary’s College, Indiana University South Bend, Bethel College, and the South Bend Community teach Take Ten at the various elementary, middle, and high schools as well as Center for the Homeless, Boys and Girls Club, Robinson Community Learning Center, and South Bend Juvenile Correctional Facility.  In addition to teaching the curriculum, volunteers and members assist with various Take Ten projects including the annual poster contest, t-shirt contest, and Take Ten festival.

The Robinson Community Learning Center (RCLC) AmeriCorps program strives to provide low-income, minority youth with the educational support and healthy community they need in order to thrive. The RCLC offers a multifaceted approach to addressing these needs, with programs including tutoring, conflict resolution, and entrepreneurship. AmeriCorps members support the goal of improving educational outcomes for those in poverty by coordinating a range of educational programs, recruiting volunteers, expanding outreach, and developing curricula to respond to community needs.

Indiana Response and Preparedness Corps - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Indiana Response and Preparedness Corps (RAP Corps) – @ The American Red Cross of Northeast Indiana

The Indiana Response and Preparedness Corps (RAP Corps) engaged 160 volunteers to canvas neighborhoods in Fort Wayne with Disaster Preparedness materials in English, Spanish, Burmese and French (the languages most commonly spoken in Fort Wayne) and offered smoke detectors to families, if they have no smoke detector in the house.

They worked with several universities to solicit volunteers as well as other community agencies such as United Way, Turnstone, Mayor's Youth Council, John Chapman Kiwanis Clup, IPFW Circle K Club, Key Clubs, and several other community agencies.   Additionally, the Red Cross worked with its International Services program to provide bilingual and multilingual volunteers to translate written materials and to interpret on site as volunteers
canvass neighborhoods.

Scott County AmeriCorps - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

Scott County AmeriCorps - Scott County Partnership

Scott County AmeriCorps planned their Martin Luther King, Jr.  event  to provide education, awareness, skill building, and opportunities for further knowledge in the areas of safety which cover the gamut of personal, home, work, and environment. This was accomplished by organizing and implementing safety and awareness fairs were held at three strategically placed accessible locations within Scott County. The fairs included hands on demonstrations, educational booths, workshops, and one on one created home safety evacuation planning conducted by trained AmeriCorps members and community volunteers.  From start to finish their project included approximately 100 to 150 new volunteers that were engaged in service to their community.  Scott County AmeriCorps members partnered with organizations like New Hope Services and Prevent Child Abuse Scott County Council Incorporated in effort to spread the word about safety for their event.

Home Fire Escape Plan - created by a patron of the safety and awareness fair.

USI ACT - Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Service

USI ACT – University of Southern Indiana

The AmeriCorps program, USI ACT, planned an event in concert with the Glenwood Leadership Academy which, in part, serves students with physical and learning disabilities.

The USI ACT AmeriCorps members taught about the spirit of inclusion brought about by Martin Luther King, Jr.  They also made blankets to give to the Ark Crisis Nursery, held a canned food drive for Lucas Place II, an organization providing transitional housing for homeless veterans, and created disaster relief kits for the community surrounding Glenwood.

Lindsey Ours and Sabrina Smith, LeaderCorps members from the USI ACT AmeriCorps Program helped to coordinate their organization’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day event.  Lindsey was quoted in The University’s newspaper “The Shield” saying:

“The kids have been really receptive to service and have been having a lot of fun getting to be creative,” Ours said. “All of them like serving. One thing the program stressed was the purpose of MLK Jr. Day itself. People sometimes forget that it’s not just a day you get off of work or school. It’s a day of service, to give back to others. MLK was a great believer in service and giving back, and all the USI AmeriCorps volunteers hope that they can pass that massage along.”

The local newspaper, The Evansville Courier & Press, wrote an article about the program featuring Sabrina and Lindsey and Program Director for USI ACT,  Marcey Head-Vanpell.  You can access that story here, Evansville Courier & Press, http://www.courierpress.com/news/2012/jan/13/service-marks-mlks-legacy/
